Hermann Lismann was born in Munich and was taught by Heinrich Knirr and Franz von Stuck. He lived in Paris between 1904 and 1914 where he was among the circle of German artists in the Café du Dôme together with Hans Purrmann, Albert Weisgerber and Rudolf Levy. After initially being influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, Lismann gradually began to turn away from German avant-garde painting and, after encountering modern Italian and French art, developed his own style throughout the 1920s, which was close to New Objectivity. He regularly travelled to the South of France and Italy, where the present portrait of a young woman carrying water was made.
