An ivory netsuke of Kiyohime, by Gyokutôsai. Early 19th century

Winding her snake body around the bell of Dôjôji, she has stripped herself of her robe with cherry blossoms in fine line engraving to reveal a robe with triangular scale pattern (uroko), as worn by the nô actor in the drama “Dôjôji”. The eye pupils of brass, the teeth blackened for effect. Signed Gyokutôsai with kaô in an irregular reserve.
