A stag antler obi-hasami netsuke of a kappa, by Michael Birch. 1990s

Rising like a footless ghost, the carapace suggested by the natural outer skin of the antler, the amusingly grotesque head with deep-set eyes and firmly closed mouth with two visible teeth. The deep depression on the head inlaid with mother-of-pearl, the eyes of gold-rimmed black glass. Signed MHB incised on an inlaid gold tablet.
Height 12.8 cm

The great English carver Michael Birch (1926-2008) started carving netsuke in the 1970s and this is one of his popular later models.
