With a handwritten birthday greeting to the reverse: "zum Geburtstag 1939 / Max Clarenbach".
Both the personal greeting to the reverse of the work and its square format are unusual for Clarenbach's oeuvre. The motif of the piece, showing a scene in late summer depicted in vivid tones, is less unusual, despite the fact that Clarenbach is often associated with cooler winter scenes. The artist was fascinated by landscapes throughout the seasons, as exemplified by the numerous views he painted of his own garden in Wittlaer. The present work probably shows the artist's own estate in the Rhineland.
