A red silk brocade Dharani Sutra panel. Around 1900

A red silk brocade Dharani Sutra panel, the central panel with a Buddhist stupa filled with a text of the Dharani Sutra in lantsa characters in horizontal lines, surrounded by round and square cartouches filled with single lantsa characters. At the bottom a cartouche with Chinese characters. Yellow silk lining. Around 1900.

Dharani Sutra panels were used as a cover for a coffin in funeral ceremonies of Imperial family members of the first four grades. Phrases from the Dharani Sutra were invoked for spiritual benefits. According to Buddhist belief such invocations would protect the deceased against evils in this life and the next.
