An Edo/Tokyo school Shibayama ivory manjû of a kappa in a rain shower, by Sôichi. Second half 19th century

Sheltering underneath a tattered umbrella with a sake bottle in his hand, by a rivulet in which swims a cucumber. Inlays of soft metal, malachite, mother-of-pearl, tortoise-shell and green stone. Signed on the reverse Sôichi on a mother-of-pearl tablet and a red seal with a kaô.
Diameter 4.4 cm

Cucumbers were offered to the kappa to keep them appeased.
