Eberbach abbey was founded as the second Cistercian monastery in the German speaking areas by Abbot Ruthard. After being thoroughly pillaged and abandoned during the 30 years war, it was later annexed to Kurmainz abbey. Eberbach first experienced a renewed economic boom in the 18th century, during which the church was redecorated in the baroque fashion. This piece was possibly kept in the sacristy, the abbots study or library.
