A large signed Castelli D'Abruzzo maiolica plaque with river landscape decor. Große signierte Bildplatte

Painted over cream coloured glaze with a detailed river landscape in "grand feu" polychromy, with a yellow and brown border. Signed and dated within the depiction to the end of the bridge: Dr. F.A.Grue p.A.1727. With a reattached breakage to the lower right corner and two rim chips. 25 x 35.2 cm.

Dr. Francesco Antonio Saverino Grue is considered the most important artist of the Grue family in Castelli. He was proud of his academic title, and often included it in his signatures. After leading the ceramicists of Crivelli in a tax revolt in 1716, he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment in Naples, but was still allowed to paint during this time. The present work was made just a few years after his release.
