Probably West Germany 14th century

A 14th century, probably West German carved wooden figure of St. Peter.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A figure of St. Peter standing in contrapposto on an earth mound base with his right foot extended and holding his attributes - keys and a book - in his hands. The gentle curve of the figure's body characteristic of this period is emphasised by the long pleats of his red, floor-length robe, which contrast with the rounded folds and lateral drapery of the saint's greenish-gold cloak.
Losses due to insect damage to the reverse of the plinth. Very minor wear. Height 63 cm.
