West Germany 15th century

A 15th century west German carved oak figure of a monk with a hurdy gurdy.

Carved in the round.. A figure of a seated monk facing right and playing a hurdy gurdy held under his left arm. The diminutive size of the work, motif, detailed carving of the reverse and the truncation of the edges all point to an original function as the crowning element of the right armrest of a choir stool.
A small breakage to the left edge of the plinth. Minor wear. 19.5 x 18.5 x 7.5 cm.
