West Germany mid 15th century

A mid 15th century west German carved wooden pietà group.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With partially overpainted older polychromy. On a domed earth mound base. The Virgin is shown seated and dressed in a matronly gown, supporting the drooping head of Her Son with Her hand. The group is characterised by the stark contrast between the pale flesh of Christ's body and the opulent drapery of the Virgin's red and blue garments.
With a small, older restored breakage to the lower right on the reverse. With minor wear. Height 61 cm.
