Probably Central Germany 2nd half 15th century

A probably central German carved wooden Corpus Christi, 2nd half 15th century.

Carved in the round. With old and probably original, only marginally overpainted, polychromy. A depiction of Christ crucified with three nails, His head inclined slightly to the right and hanging in defeat, the knees broken. This finely carved piece shows exceptional quality in the anatomical depiction of the body and the fluttering, animated folds of the perizonium, which is fastened by a thin cord about Christ's waist. The carved stigmata are accentuated by droplets of painted blood and contrast starkly against the pale flesh of the body.
Two short, narrow cracks to the perizonium. The arms visibly reattached. Firmly mounted to a velvet-covered frame. Height 32 cm, span of arms 23 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, Rhineland.
