Probably Franconia ca. 1510

A Franconian carved wooden figure of Saint John, circa 1510.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse heavily hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. A full-figure depiction of the saint standing on a small earth mound, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. The apostle holds his right hand (probably a replacement) aloft in a blessing gesture, and his attribute the chalice in the left hand. The piece is characterised by the fine contrast between the vertically pleated red robe and the heavy folds of the green and gold cloak held drawn across the saint’s body.
A replaced breakage to the front of the plinth, a small, backed loss to the lower right of the golden cloak. Wear with minor losses. Height 104 cm.
