Nuremberg ca. 1515/1520

A Nuremberg carved limewood figure of the Madonna Immaculata, circa 1515/1520.

Carved in the round, minor remains of former polychromy. A large figure of the crowned Virgin standing in contrapposto and slightly inclined towards the nude Christ Child, who She holds in Her right hand above Her hip. The figure is carved in the round and was apparently intended to be displayed on a pole and viewed from all angles, as the underside of the cloud bank has also been worked in full. The tips of the crescent moon typical of the Madonna Immaculata motif were formerly attached via dowels but are now lost. The work can be stylistically placed to Nuremberg in the first decade of the 16th century and displays the influence of the works of Veit Stoss.
The sceptre lost, the Madonna's left hand probably replaced. A deep, round drilled hole to the underside. Minor wear. Height 120 cm.

Provenance

Formerly collection of Dr. Weißmantel.
