Extremely long and rare Nagamaki. 16th century

An extremely long and rare nagamaki, blade length 106 cm, shinogi-zukuri, suguha hamon, itame hada, nakago: ubu, two mekugi-ana, mei: Hôshû Takada-jû Fujiwara Munekage. Dated: a day in August and numbered 16 at the bottom end. Sashikomi polish.
Koshirae: Tsuba: Iron, mokkô-shaped with a fisherman near a pond below a willow tree and clouds, tsuka and saya lacquered red and partly ribbed. 16th century. Total length 211 cm.
Blade-length 106 cm; total-length 211 cm

Munekage's civilian name was Nakama Yo'ichibei, one of the fore-most representative smiths of the Taira-Takada school. According to legend he and Muneyuki were rewarded the character 'Mune' by the Sengoku-daimyô Ôtomo Yoshimune (1558-1610).
