Inlaid with ebony, ivory, mother-of-pearl, malachite, carnelian and lapis lazuli. An Italian Renaissance style miniature frame. Minor losses to the inner border. H 30.5, W 27.4 cm, inner dimensions 12 x 9 cm.
Rome, last quarter 19th C., probably Giovanni Battista Gatti.

The Roman marquetry artist Giovanni Battista Gatti produced works for six world exhibitions betweem 1855 and 1878. He specialised in fine inlays of the highest technical quality, as demonstrated by the present work.
