Lothringen circa 1410/1420

A small white sandstone pietà group, Lorraine Region, circa 1410/1420.

Carved from so called "Jurakalk" stone with fossilised inclusions. With 19th century polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin seated on a bench with tracery decor to the sides. The body of Christ is shown lain in His mother's lap with the wounds of His martyrdom strongly emphasised, whilst She sits with Her head lowered to gaze upon Him. Laboratory analysis of the stone has allowed this small devotional image to be localised to one of the major artistic centres of the Lorraine Region, probably Nancy or Metz.
In perfect condition. A stone sample has been taken from the underside. 16 x 18.5 x 7 cm.
