Probably Nuremberg circa 1485/1490

A limewood figure of the Christ Child blessing, presumably carved in Nuremberg circa 1485/1490.

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. With the original polychromy.. The nude Christ Child is shown standing in contrapposto with His left foot drawn back, gazing down towards the devotional beholder with His right hand raised in blessing and holding a globe in His left hand. The sculpting of the body and the fine depiction of the hair speak for an origin in South Germany, presumably Nuremberg.
In good overall condition. The arms previously broken and visibly reattached, the left hand with the globe and the plinth possibly additions. Height 43.5 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
