Franconia circa 1500

A Franconian carved limewood Anna Selbdritt group, circa 1500.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. The polychromy renewed in the late 18th century.. A figural group of the enthroned Saint Anne holding her daughter Mary and the Christ Child on her knees, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The matronly Saint Anne gazes upwards, Mary hands her son an open book and the nude Christ Child holds a globe. The compact appearance of the composition is enlivened by the rich drapery of Saint Anne's cloak, the pattern of which recalls works by the followers of Veit Stoss in Nuremberg.
Mounted on a flat, correspondingly overpainted base. With minimal wear. Height 86 cm.

Provenance

Purchased in the late 19th century on the South German art market, subsequently in the ownership of an Upper Bavarian aristocratic family. - The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
