South German ca. 1610/1620

A South German carved limewood figure of the Virgin Immaculata.

Carved in the round. Remains of original polychromy.. This small figure of the Virgin at first glance appears to be a late Gothic work, and follows the composition of Albrecht Dürer's 1508 copperplate engraving "Maria im Strahlenkranz", but both the hair and physiognomy of the Child and the softer overall feel of the work indicates that it is in fact a fine quality example of the "Dürer Renaissance" style.
The Child's left leg replaced, otherwise very minor wear. Height 27 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
