South German circa 1610/1620

A South German carved limewood figure of the Virgin of the Annunciation, circa 1610/1620.

The reverse flattened, with the original polychromy and gilding.. The composition of this relief depiction of the Madonna in prayer would have originally been complimented by the angel Gabriel and is based on Albrecht Dürer's woodcut of this subject in his "Small Passion", completed in 1509/1511. The work is a typical product of the "Dürer Renaissance" which took place around 1600, and utilises his composition but with a distinctly early Baroque treatment of the figures, ornaments and polychromy.
Very minor wear. 58 x 27 x 5 cm.
