Franconia circa 1600/1625

A Franconian alabaster figure of Saint John, circa 1600/1625.

Carved in the round. A standing figure of the youthful Saint John facing slightly towards the right, presumably from a crucifixion group. The sturdy but sophisticated design of the piece as well as the characteristic physiognomy allowed the piece to be localised to the lower Franconian region in the early 17th century at the Aschaffenburg Exhibition of 2014.
The hands lost, losses to the feet and plinth, further wear. Mounted on a modern marble plinth. Height 62 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
