Johann Benedikt Witz

A carved limewood figure of the mourning Saint John from a crucifixion group.

The reverse flattened.. This small, starkly modelled figure shows St. John, Christ's favourite disciple, turned dramatically to the left where he would originally have looked up towards the cross. The figure can be dated to around 1760 and represents an especially fine and characteristic example of this Würzburg sculptor's work.
The right hand and the tip of the left foot are old replacements. The surface has been stripped of a former dark varnish. Height 27.5 cm.

Provenance

The Dr. Bernhard Decker Collection.
