Probably Spain 13th century

A presumably Spanish 13th century carved wooden figure of the Virgin enthroned.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With extensive remains of partially overpainted, older polychomy.. A figure of the Virgin seated on a throne designed for a frontal viewpoint. She presumably originally would have held the Christ Child in Her lost right hand. The Madonna wears a plain, girded gown and a cloak drawn over Her head, shoulders and knees which falls in a regular pattern of straight folds and curving seams.
Losses to the plinth, wear with losses to the polychromy. Height 61 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, Rhineland.
