Swabia circa 1480/1490

A Swabian carved wooden Pietà group, circa 1480/1490.

The reverse flattened and hollowed out in the lower section. With older, partially overpainted polychromy.. The Virgin is shown in a red gown and golden cloak, seated on a rock and cradling the head of Her dead Son in Her right hand. His body is lain horizontally at Her feet and covered with the blood of His martyrdom. The round opening in Christ's chest was presumably intended as a reliquary.
The Virgin's back lined with canvas beneath the polychromy, the lower section of the reverse boarded over. Some wear. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 48 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

Private ownership, Hesse.
