Flemish late 15th century

A late 15th century Flemish carved wooden figure of Saint Catherine.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. A standing figure of the Saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She is turned slightly to the side, crowned and dressed in sumptuous attire. The Saint holds an open book in her left hand and with her right hand she holds a sword over the head of Emperor Maxentius, who is depicted as a tiny figure at her feet.
Saint Catherine's right hand and the front of Emperor Maxentius' head reattached. The sword blade possibly replaced. Very minor wear. Height 88 cm.
