Probably Nuremberg early 16th century

An early 16th century figure of the mourning Virgin, probably carved in Nuremberg.

Presumably limewood, carved in the round. Minimal remains of former polychromy.. The standing figure of the Virgin stands on a flat, profiled plinth in balanced contrapposto with Her hands clasped and Her head slightly lowered. Her gown falls in evenly curved, parallel folds to the ground and is complimented by the deeply undercut trains of drapery from the cloak which the Virgin wears drawn over her head and which also reaches right down to the plinth, forming compressed folds to her right. The figure probably originates from a crucifixion group.
The right hand reattached. With several fine vertical cracks and minimal wear. Height 103 cm.
