South France first half 16th century

A Southern French carved wood high-relief scene from the life of a Pope, first half 16th century.

Flattened to the reverse. Older, partially overpainted polychromy.. Worked in high-relief with a projecting, bevelled plinth and similarly projecting rocky surmount. The piece presumably originates from an altarpiece depicting the life of a saintly pope in several scenes. Here, the pope is shown beneath a canopy in the centre of the composition in the midst of deacons and cardinals with a cross-bearing acolyte striding before them.
Losses to the upper and lower edges, stabilised by a restorer. Very minimal wear. 82 x 52 x 10 cm.

Certificate
