South German early 18th century

An early 18th century South German carved limewood figure of the mourning Virgin.

Carved half in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With extensive remains of a partially overpainted and presumably original former polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin standing in contrapposto, wringing Her hands and with her head bowed in grief. The work presumably originates from a crucifixion group.
Wear with losses to the polychromy. Mounted on a flat, wooden plinth. Height 51 cm (without the plinth).

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
