A black lacquer and makie bento-bako. Late 19th century

A black lacquer portable picnic set (sage-jûbako) comprising a tiered lidded food container, a rectangular sake cask set into a box, a lidded box, a box with five trays and a removable larger tray, decorated overall with chrysanthemums, bellflowers, blossoming plum and cherry branches, iris, poppy and narzissus in baskets in gold and silver hiramakie with inlays of gold foil and aogai on a shiny black lacquer ground. The carrying case pierced on the ends with shaped apertures displaying shokkô and hanabishi pattern. Some gold foil missing, traces of usage. Late 19th century.
