Estimate: 34.000 € - 38.000 €

A pair of Berlin silver wine coolers made for Ernst August, Duke of Cumberland and King of Hannover.

With silver-plated cylindrical insets. Decorated to the sides in relief with the crowned coat-of-arms of Brunswick-Lüneburg with the Order of the Garter and a device. Marks of Johann George Hossauer, ca. 1837. H 29 cm, weight without insets ca. 3980 g.

The form of these wine coolers copies that of the famous Medici krater vase and they were probably presented to Ernst August by King Frederick William III on occasion of his ascent to the throne of Hannover in June 1837. Ernst August, fifth son of George III of Great Britain, married Friedericke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, sister of Queen Louise of Prussia, in 1815.
