The exceptional comedy "The Government Inspector" was written by Gogol in 1835 and published and performed for the first time a year later. Today it is one of the most widely performed plays worldwide. However, Gogol's impressive novel "Dead Souls", the first part of which was published in 1842, never met with the same popularity.
