An important gold, enamel and rock crystal ring with a crucifixion scene

Designed as an oval rock crystal capsule containing a Calvary scene in relief enamel. The black enamelled underside with "JHS" Christogram, cross and three nails. Minimal remains to the enamel of the relief band. Some losses to the enamel. 1.6 x 1.4 cm. Ring size 52. Weight 5.2 g.
Probably France, ca. 1600.

A similar gold and enamel ring with a depiction of the crucifixion beneath quartz is kept in the British Museum in London (inv. no. 1978,1002.105), where it is listed as "France, ca. 1600". A further example was sold by Sotheby's in London in 2013 (4th December 2013, lot 63).
