Ecce Homo

Oil on canvas. 65.5 x 51 cm.

The “Ecco Homo” motif of Christ bound and wearing the crown of thorns is among the most well-known works of the Milanese painter Andrea Solario. The composition must have exerted a strong fascination on contemporary painters and collectors, as it exists in numerous versions of varying quality. David Alan Brown has confirmed two signed versions to be original (Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig; Sammlung Johnson, Philadelphia). All the other versions were made by members of the artist's circle or school, for example the present work, which has remained in a French private collection for decades.

Provenance

Private collection, France.
