Maasland second half 14th century

A limestone figure of Saint Agatha, Maasland, second half 14th century

Carved in the round. Extensive remains of newer polychromy. A finely carved depiction of a crowned saint holding an open book in her right hand. She may originally have held a further identifying attribute in her lost left hand, but the fact that her breast is depicted exposed and bound with a rope allows us to identify the figure as Saint Agatha. The vertical folds of her gown and the curved horizontal drapery of her cloak accentuate the figure’s gently swaying pose.
Right hand and the surrounding drapery lacking. Crack to the book. Wear with losses. Height 88 cm.

Provenance

From a French collection.
