A Bavarian carved wood Pieta group, circa 1430/1440

Partially freestanding, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Older polychromy, partially overpainted. An expressive devotional image designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. The Virgin is shown seated on a rocky ledge, crading the body of Her dead Son in Her lap. Christ's wounds are picked out in deep red upon His pale flesh, which forms a sharp contrast to the Virgin's richly draped golden cloak.
The rays of the aureola loosely pegged. Minor wear. Height 57 cm.
