Hans Strigel the Elder

A limewood figure of a female Saint by Hans Strigel the Elder

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. Presumably with the original, partially overpainted polychromy. A figure of a crowned female saint dressed in a pleated, floor-length, high waisted gown and a cloak worn around the shoulders and drawn about her body, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The size, composition and colouration of this work provide an exact pendant to the previous lot, and like the figure of the Virgin, this piece can also be attributed to Hans Strigel the Elder and dated to around 1440. The work also originates from Deuchelried near Wangen in Upper Swabia and was also part of the Diehl collection in the early 20th century.
The formerly pegged hands lacking. A crack to the front of the plinth and the back of the head. Wear with minor losses. Height 117 cm.
