Probably Flemish late 15th century

A presumably Flemish late 15th century wooden figure of Saint Eucharius

Presumably oak, carved in the round. Extensive remains of older polychromy. A standing figure of the saint in episcopal robes, designed for a frontal viewpoint. The dragon at the figure's feet allows us to identify him as Eucharius, the first bishop of Trier. He presumably originally held a bishop's crozier in his extended right hand and a model of a church on his left arm.
The pegged right hand, the attribute under the left arm and the fingers of the left hand lacking. Wear. Height 85 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, Belgium.
