Swabia early 16th century

An early 16th century Swabian limewood figure of Saint Roch

Carved in the round, the reverse in less detail. Minimal remains of former polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in contrapposto and dressed in pilgrim's attire. With his right hand he holds his garments to reveal the plague pustule on his thigh to the angel beside him; the staff in his left hand has been lost. Another of his attributes - a little dog holding a loaf of bread in its mouth - is depicted at his feet. The sculptor of this work has paid particular attention to the carving of the richly draped and deeply undercut folds of the figure's robes.
The previously pegged right hand of the angel lost, the wings a later replacement. With some fine, vertical cracks and minimal wear. Height 92 cm.
