Bastiano Torrigiani, gen. il Bologna

A fire-gilt bronze Corpus Christi by Bastiano Torrigiani, called il Bologna

Cast in the round. A figure of Christ crucified with three nails, with finely modelled musculature and carefully observed details. When the piece was purchased in 1970, it was ascribed to Tiziano Aspetti. However, the research of Professor Ulrich Middeldorf (Kunsthistorisches Institut, Florence) has revealed that this piece in bronze was cast from the same mould as a work in silver which was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII for the church of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna in 1581. The silver crucifix is attributed to Bastiano Torrigiani, one of the leading sculptors of his era.
Slight wear to the gilding, otherwise in perfect condition. Height 24 cm, width of arms 20 cm.

Provenance

Acquired from a Florentine art dealer in 1970, henceforth in German private ownership.
