An ivory figure of the Virgin on the crescent attributed to Dio Claudio Beissonat

Ivory, carved in the round, wooden base. This finely worked piece shows the Virgin of the immaculate conception standing upon a cloud bank and accompanied by an angel. The carved ivory panels worked into the wooden plinth depict the annunciation and the adoration of the shepherds. A similar, but slightly larger, ivory figure of the Virgin attributed to Dio Claudio Beissonat was sold by Sotheby's in Rome on 18.5.2004 (lot 425).
The reverse yellowed. Minor wear. Loosely attached to the plinth. Height 35 cm (with plinth).
