South German 18th century

An 18th century South German carved wood figure of Saint Roch

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. The hat worked separately and attached. With older, probably overpainted, polychromy. A figure of the saint in pilgrim's garb with a scallop shell sewn to his hat. His cloak is pulled back to reveal the plague pustle on his thigh. A further attribute of this saint, a dog with bread in its mouth, can be seen at the figure's feet.
Minimal wear. Height 126 cm.
