A hanging scroll of the Thirteen Buddhas (Jûsanbutsu) by an anonymous painter of the Edo period

A hanging scroll of the Thirteen Buddhas by an anonymous painter depicting Kokuzô, Amida, Ashuku, Dainichi, Seishi, Kannon, Yakuhi, Monju, Jizô, Miroku, Fugen, Amida and Fudô. Ink, colours and gold on paper. Two wooden boxes and a cardboard box.

The Thirteen Buddhas (Jûsanbutsu) of the Shingon sect represent the chief deities of the Taizôkai and Kongokai mandalas. The group consists of five Buddhas, seven bodhisattvas and Fudô Myôô. They assist people during their lifetime and continue to assist them after death. Except for Dainichi, Seishi and Kokuzô, they are considered as Buddhist forms of the Ten Kings of Hell.
Images of the Jûsanbutsu were used during the mourning period after a person's death and in the memorial services held three years thereafter. This practice became popular during the Muromachi period.
