Flemish School, early 17th century

Adam and Eve at the Tree of Knowledge Eve passing Adam the Forbidden Fruit

Oil on copper. Each 14.5 x 11.5 cm.

The works follow compositions from a series of six copperplate engravings by Jan Pietersz. Saenredam (1565-1607) after drawings by the Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1564-1651) from 1604. The paintings copy the second and third pages from the series of engravings with the story of Adam and Eve (cf. Marcel G. Roethlisberger: Abraham Bloemaert and his Sons. Paintings and Prints, 2 vols., Doornspijk 1993, vol. 1, p. 121ff, no. 73 & 74).
