An 18k gold pendant with a heliotrope cameo

The oval bloodstone plaque (ca. 33 x 22 mm) depicting Christ crowned with thorns in a narrow gold frame with a profiled hanging loop. 3.6 x 2.5 cm. Weight 11.6 g.
17th/18th C., gold mounting 20th C.

The gem cutter has exploited the bright red flecks in the stone to suggest droplets of blood, thus creating a highly expressive depiction of Christ's suffering.
