A Meissen porcelain teapot formed as a pumpkin

Decorated with two merchant scenes reserved on pale turquoise. Indistinct blue crossed swords mark, gold 66, impressed 33. H 12.5 cm.
Ca. 1740 - 45, painted in the manner of Christian Friedrich Herold.

Meissen produced a number of forms inspired by Chinese designs for an order placed by Rudolph Lemaire, and this teapot model was almost certainly among them. The body of the present example was made in the early 1740s, and the lid was almost certainly formed at the same time but intended for a fluted or scalopped piece.

Provenance

Westphalian private collection.
