A pair of courtly Hannover silver serving dishes. Marks of Frantz Peter Bunsen, ca. 1780.

The border decorated with two opposing coats of arms under ducal crowns with the device of the Order of the Garter "Honi soit qui mal y pense". L 30, W 24.5 cm, weight 1,902 g.

Our dishes by the Hannover court goldsmith Frantz Peter Bunsen were made for the British royal family under George III. The crowned lion in the engravings is a motif deriving from the British royal crest and was used by George III's brothers and sons in conjunction with the ducal crown. Thus, the piece could have been made for the Dukes of Cumberland, Kent, Gloucester, Sussex, Cambridge or York.

Provenance

From a Lower Saxonian private collection.
