Probably Alpenländisch first half 14th century

A carved wood figure of the Virgin Enthroned, presumably Alpine Region, 1st half 14th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out, the throne bevelled. Remains of older and partially retouched polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin enthroned, designed for a frontal viewpoint. She holds the standing, clothed figure of Christ on Her knee steady with Her left hand. The way in which the Virgin sits with Her legs straight forward and parallel enhances the frontal and hieratic qualities of the work.
The Child's hands and the Virgin's right hand replaced. The Child's head probably renewed. Fine vertical cracks. Wear. Height 70 cm.

Provenance

Formerly belonging to the collection of the Freiherrn von Ompteda.
