Probably German 15th century

A 15th century gilt copper processional cross, presumably German

Cast, chased, engraved, and gilt copper over a wooden body and iron pricket.. Alongside the Corpus Christi, the front of the cross also bears images of the mourning Virgin and Saint John to the horizontal terminals, as well as Saint John the Baptist and a blessing bishop with a mitre and crozier to the vertical terminals. The central depiction of the saviour to the back of the piece is accompanied by images of the Apostles Peter and, possibly, Paul. The upper terminal is occupied by the figure of a bear-headed saint with a church model who is lacking the attribute in his right hand. The figure could represent Saint Severin, as the piece is traditionally thought to have been commissioned by the Church of Saint Severin in Cologne.
In generally good condition, with some wear and minor dents. Height (without pricket) 45 cm, width 37 cm.

Provenance

Formerly the Matzker Collection, Cologne.
