Flemish second half 15th century

A Flemish brass figure of a Bishop Saint, second half 15th century

Cast three-quarters in the round, the reverse slightly flattened.. A standing figure of a saint in a bishop's robes, designed for a frontal viewpoint. He is dressed in a mitre and manipel, holds an open book in his left hand and presumably originally held a - now lost - bishop's crozier in his right. This solid cast piece is presumed to originate from the workshops of Dinant in the Meuse river valley.
Two minor breakages to the reverse. Mounted on a modern base. Height 32 cm (without base).

Provenance

Private collection, Belgium.
